Several of the most prominent members of the First Fleet, including Arthur Phillip, were contracted to publishers in England, who were to publish their journals or accounts of the period.

The journals or accounts of Phillip, Watkin Tench, David Collins, John Hunter, William Bligh and Philip Gidley King are fascinating, although couched through an individual’s viewpoint, and possibly altered by the publishers.

Matthew Flinders’ A Voyage to Terra Australis (1814); George Bass’s Journal of a Whaleboat Voyage along the Southern Coast of New Holland 3rd of December 1797 to 25th of February 1798; and Ida Lee’s Log Books of the ‘Lady Nelson’ (1915) depict epic hands-on events.
