1835 American Samuel Morse sent long and short beeps with the Telegraph equipment so communication became possible in  hour or minutes and NOT months.

Australia's first Telegraph,  was between Melbourne and Williamstown in 1858. With the Gold Boom in Victoria the line was extended to Ballarat then 1 year later to Queenscliff.

For the South Australian Colonial Government,  Todd started work in 1855.

By 1860 most towns in New South Wales were connected.

Tasmania in 1857 was first connected to Victoria under water. Later to be connected via King Island.

Queensland was connected in 1860.

Western Australia - Perth to Fremantle in 1869.

Colonies in Australia were keen to secure the route from The Gulf of Carpentaria to their own State Capital.

After a great deal of negotation, it was resolved to connect Darwin to Adelaide, follwowing explorer Stuart's route. A route that basically runs North from Adelaide to Darwin and bisects Australia.

`In 1872, the undersea cable from Java arrived at Darwin, and in 1872 the TELEGRAPH ROUTE was completed.

Eleven manned Repeater Telegraph Stations were set up along the TELEGRAPH LINE.

In laying the line, work was started at bothe ends to meet somewhere in the middle of Australia. 3000 kilometres of Galvanised Telegraph wirenwas used. Afghan Camel Trains carried supplies. 3000 iron posts were stocked, in case wooden posts became unavailable.

In 1942 the rest of Australia heard about the Japanese Bombing of Darwin, over the TELEGRAPH LINE
